Health Education
Centro San Vicente’s Puente de Salud health education and lifestyle promotion program is available for all clinic patrons and community members. Classes are offered in both Spanish and English.
Puente de Salud is generously funded by grants from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation; Health Resources and Services Administration; Susan G. Komen El Paso Affiliate; March of Dimes; Area Agency on Aging; and The Rio Grande Cancer Foundation. In addition to group classes, we offer individual sessions for Diabetes Management.
Programs
Paso a Paso/Step by Step
These classes teach people who have diabetes how to manage their illness. Information on high blood pressure, cholesterol and exercise is also presented. This is a 6 week program in which the participants attend once a week for two hours each session.
Su Corazón, Su Vida/Your Heart, Your Life
This program focueses on the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease. Information will also be provided on nutrition, cholesterol, exercise, and weight control. Information on the effects of second-hand smoke/environmental tobacco smoke is also presented. This is an 8 week program in which the participant attends once a week for two hours each session.
Adult Smoking Cessation Program
This is a 10-hour smoking cessation program for anyone who has the desire to quit smoking. It teaches skills that improve the success of cessation, as well as act as a support system through the cessation process. Participants attend five, two-hour sessions. This program is offered at least three times a year with enough time between classes to allow for recruitment of participants. Under the care of a Centro San Vicente medical provider, medication therapy (nicotine replacement therapy) is also available for registered clinic patients only.
Youth Smoking Cessation Program
This eight-hour smoking cessation program is for youth ages 13 to 17 who have the desire to quit smoking. This program is also a ticket dismissal program for the state of Texas, for those who wish to have a citation dismissed by court. This is the only program that has a cost of $40 for the participant if the municipal court referred them; free for voluntary participants.
Comenzando Bien Prenatal Program
Group classes are offered in this 8 two-hour session course, which utilizes the Comenzando Bien curriculum developed by the March of Dimes. Join us to learn how to keep healthy during your pregnancy. Topics include nutrition, exercises, common discomforts, coping with stress, healthy weight gain, signs of labor, and so much more! Classes are offered in both English and Spanish. Support partners are welcomed to join you!
Steps For Your Health
This exercise program will provide the tools needed to begin your steps to healthier you. Whether you are a beginner, getting started, or need to enhance your current exercise program, we can help.
Cultivando La Salud/Cultivating Health
This program developed by the National Center for Farmworker Health is a one-time two-hour class offering information on breast and cervical cancer prevention and discusses the importance of screening practices.
Diabetes Self-management Training
If you want to learn how to set your own goals and learn how to manage your diates, this is the training for you. Come meet with a Certified Health Education Specialist to learn how to develop and monitor your self-management goals.
Fit Families
Do you have children ages 6-17? Then consider joining a comprehensive program which offers health education integrated into a children's exercise program utilizing a combination of circuit training and resistance training in fun-filled activities. Focused on the entire family, this program encourages and incorporates parent participation.
Tomando Control/Chronic Disease Self-management Program
This Chronic Disease Self-Management Program was developed at Stanford University Patient Education Research Center as a collaborative research project between Stanford and the Northern California Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program. If you would like to manage your chronic illness to include, but not limited to asthma, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, CVD, etc. then makes plans to attend this program. Here you will learn how to improve healthful behaviors and decrease "sick" days.
